A beloved medical sitcom returns as ABC prepares to revive Scrubs, with Braff on board and hopes high for a reunion of the Sacred Heart crew.
Get ready to scrub back in. Zach Braff has officially signed on to reprise his role as Dr. John “J.D.” Dorian in a reboot of Scrubs, the cult-classic medical comedy that ran from 2001 to 2010. The revival is currently in active development at ABC and marks a significant milestone for fans who’ve been hoping for a reunion of the Sacred Heart team.
First reported as in early development in late 2024, the reboot has now moved forward with Braff’s confirmation, renewing excitement across the industry and among longtime viewers. Original series creator Bill Lawrence is also attached as executive producer, bringing an essential creative continuity to the project, although he will not serve as showrunner due to ongoing commitments at Warner Bros. Television.
Lawrence has long expressed interest in bringing Scrubs back in some form, but behind-the-scenes negotiations between Disney—who owns the rights to the series—and Warner Bros. TV—where Lawrence remains under an overall deal—complicated the timeline. Lawrence’s current work includes critical hits like Ted Lasso, Shrinking, and Bad Monkey, all under the WBTV umbrella.
Scrubs originally aired on NBC for seven seasons before being canceled and subsequently revived by ABC for its eighth season. That season served as a proper farewell for most of the characters, but the network unexpectedly greenlit a ninth season subtitled Scrubs: Med School. The final season featured a new cast of characters, with only John C. McGinley (Dr. Cox) and Donald Faison (Turk) remaining as series regulars. Braff appeared in six of the thirteen episodes, and many fans considered the rebooted format a departure from the series' core strengths.
What made Scrubs stand out from its sitcom contemporaries was its blend of absurdist comedy with grounded, emotional storytelling. The use of voiceover narration, surreal fantasy sequences, and unexpected tearjerker moments gave it a distinct tone. The show tackled grief, love, friendship, and the day-to-day chaos of hospital life with an authenticity that struck a chord. Now, over a decade since its finale, those themes feel more relevant than ever.
The original ensemble cast included Donald Faison (Chris Turk), Sarah Chalke (Elliot Reid), Judy Reyes (Carla Espinosa), John C. McGinley (Dr. Perry Cox), Ken Jenkins (Bob Kelso), and Neil Flynn (the Janitor). Their chemistry on-screen was a driving force behind the series’ success and cultural impact. While Braff is the only cast member currently confirmed, there is widespread speculation—and hope—that additional returning cast announcements will follow in the months ahead.
In a 2024 interview reflecting on the 20th anniversary of his directorial debut Garden State, Braff voiced his enthusiasm for the potential Scrubs reunion: “The idea of getting back together with my friends and doing like 10 or 12 episodes of maybe one or two seasons, and just laughing with everyone? That sounds like a dream.” For Braff and his co-stars, the Scrubs set wasn’t just a workplace—it was a chosen family.

The reboot also arrives during a cultural moment full of nostalgia for early-2000s media. Series like Frasier, That ’70s Show (That ’90s Show), and Gilmore Girls have all found success revisiting old formats with updated perspectives. For Scrubs, the possibilities are wide open: will the revival lean into the characters’ current lives as seasoned professionals or reframe Sacred Heart for a new generation of doctors?
While details about the show’s direction remain under wraps, what’s certain is the impact the revival could have for both longtime fans and first-time viewers. Scrubs left behind a legacy of earnest humor, innovative storytelling, and a deep understanding of what makes people tick. In a world craving connection and heart, its return may offer the perfect prescription.
